16 young Guyanese recognised in China-Guyana youth leadership competition

Sixteen young Guyanese have been recognised through the fifth China-Guyana Friendship Youth Leadership Development Competition, which challenges students to turn ideas into practical projects in their schools and communities.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Yang Yang participated in the awards ceremony, where students were recognised across community service, physical challenges, art criticism and public speaking.

Among the awardees was President’s College student Romario Wolfe, who transformed an underused section of his school using plants and repurposed tyres.

His project combined environmental improvement with lessons in sustainability, demonstrating how discarded materials can be creatively reused.

Former participant and Guyana’s 2026 top Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) performer Nitya Narine also attended the ceremony.

During her participation in the competition, Narine studied students’ attitudes towards mathematics at Tagore Memorial Secondary School and developed learning kits containing puzzles, mathematical equipment and

other interactive materials.

She said the experience showed how small, practical initiatives can create positive change within schools.

The China-Guyana Friendship Youth Leadership Development Competition targets students in Grades Eight to

10 and is supported by the Ministry of Education’s Unit of Allied Arts.

The initiative is part of ongoing China-Guyana educational and people-to-people exchanges, while providing young Guyanese with opportunities to strengthen their leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
