Xi, Trump hold White House talks on trade, AI & global issues

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held talks at the White House on Thursday, with trade, artificial intelligence and global security among the major issues discussed.

According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Xi called for a “constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability,” arguing that cooperation should remain the mainstay of relations while competition is kept within limits and differences are managed.

The talks followed a new round of economic and trade consultations between the two countries. Xi said the discussions produced a new joint arrangement and called for both sides to expand areas of cooperation while reducing outstanding disputes.

Artificial intelligence also featured prominently. Xi said China and the United States, as major players in AI, should strengthen dialogue on its risks and benefits and work to prevent its misuse and abuse.

Trump, according to the Chinese readout, welcomed continued economic and trade dialogue and also supported greater U.S.-China engagement on AI.

Taiwan remained a key point of discussion, with Xi reiterating Beijing’s position on national reunification and urging Washington to oppose “Taiwan independence” and approach the issue cautiously.

The leaders also exchanged views on the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula, and agreed to support each other in hosting the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and G20 Summit.

The meeting comes as developments in U.S.-China relations continue to carry significant implications for global trade and investment, including for Caribbean economies with close economic ties to both countries.
