Catastrophic Nepal-China border floods leave many dead, hundreds missing

Rescue teams are racing to find hundreds of people still unaccounted for after powerful floodwaters devastated communities along the mountainous Nepal-China frontier.

At least 95 people have been confirmed dead after a massive collapse of mud, rock and debris reportedly sent floodwaters surging through communities near Nepal and Tibet.

The disaster damaged villages, roads, bridges, power facilities and communication networks, leaving emergency teams struggling to reach some of the hardest-hit areas.

More than 300 foreign travellers are reportedly among those unaccounted for, although authorities are working to determine whether some may have reached safety in areas where communications have been disrupted.

Dozens of injured survivors are receiving medical treatment, while dangerous terrain, swollen rivers and poor weather continue to complicate rescue operations.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the disaster and are monitoring the possibility of further flooding. Residents in vulnerable downstream communities have been urged to move to safer ground.
