China calls for smoother US ties ahead of expected Trump-Xi meeting

China has urged the United States to help ease tensions and address outstanding differences as both sides prepare for a possible meeting between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the call during discussions with US Ambassador to China David Perdue, saying Beijing and Washington should place greater emphasis on cooperation while preventing disagreements from disrupting high-level exchanges.

Wang said the relationship remains exposed to several risks and challenges, despite recent moves by both governments to prevent tensions from escalating.

Trump and Xi met in Beijing in May, where they agreed to keep bilateral relations on a steadier footing and preserve a fragile trade understanding. Another meeting is expected later this year, though China has not confirmed the exact timing of Xi’s proposed visit to the United States.

China’s Foreign Ministry said the two governments remain in contact over arrangements for future talks between the leaders.

The diplomatic push comes as economic tensions continue. Washington and Beijing have each introduced targeted trade and business restrictions, even as broader relations have shown signs of improvement.

The United States has also been considering additional tariffs on Chinese goods, while China has imposed restrictions on some American entities.

Despite the continuing disputes, both sides have kept communication channels open, with a future Trump-Xi meeting seen as important to preventing renewed deterioration in ties.
