China invests US$66M in Barbados climate resilience, food security

China is investing approximately US$66 million in major development projects aimed at strengthening Barbados' climate resilience, water security and food production.

The initiatives were highlighted during a recent media symposium and reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Barbados under the theme "A Friend in Need and a Partner in Deed," where regional journalists were updated on China's ongoing development cooperation in the Caribbean nation.

One of the flagship initiatives is the South Coast Water Reclamation Project, a three-year programme being implemented by the China Railway Shanghai Engineering Group. The project will modernize Barbados' existing wastewater treatment facilities and introduce advanced water reclamation technology, allowing treated wastewater to be reused for irrigation, groundwater recharge and other non-potable purposes.

Project Manager Wu Rongsen said the initiative is designed to improve Barbados' long-term water resilience by reducing pressure on the island's limited freshwater resources while helping it better adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The symposium also highlighted the Mechanized Upland Rice Demonstration Project, which aims to improve food security through the introduction of drought-resistant rice varieties and modern farming techniques.

Chinese officials said the project is intended to reduce Barbados' reliance on imported food while increasing domestic grain production and building the capacity of local farmers through ongoing agricultural training.

Chinese representatives described both initiatives as examples of the strong and growing partnership between China and Barbados, aimed at promoting sustainable development, improving livelihoods and enhancing climate resilience.
