China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for an end to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, warning that the war “should not have happened” and urging all parties to return to negotiations.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of China’s annual parliamentary meetings in Beijing, Wang said disputes should not be settled by force and stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the Middle East. He also indicated that China plans to send a diplomatic envoy to the region in an effort to support mediation.

Wang also signaled that Beijing remains open to dialogue with the United States, suggesting that cooperation between the world’s two largest economies is critical for global stability. While acknowledging differences between the two countries, he said neither side should seek confrontation.

The Chinese foreign minister also took aim at global trade protectionism, arguing that tariff barriers can hinder economic growth. He said China is moving in the opposite direction by expanding market access, including a decision to remove tariffs on imports from most African countries beginning May 1.

Addressing regional tensions, Wang reaffirmed China’s longstanding position that Taiwan is part of China and described the issue as an internal matter. He warned that other countries should not interfere, amid ongoing concerns about the role of Japan in the event of a Taiwan conflict.

On the situation in Gaza, Wang reiterated China’s support for a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. He welcomed international efforts to achieve a ceasefire but cautioned that significant diplomatic work remains to secure long-term stability in the region.
