The government of Grenada has announced the completion of a Chinese-funded US $12 million renovation project on the Grenada National Cricket Stadium, which will be the venue of an international test cricket match between the West Indies and Australia on July 3-7, 2025.

The project, which was executed by the Shanghai Baoye Group Co Ltd, was described as a transformative one that reaffirms the nation’s commitment to sports development, international cooperation, and national pride.

According to a press release, renovations began in February 2024 and involved comprehensive upgrades to the stadium’s infrastructure, which ensured that it meets the ‘highest international standards for hosting world-class cricket events.’

Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell said, “This renovation is more than a construction project—it is a symbol of our enduring friendship with the People’s Republic of China. It reflects our shared values of trust, solidarity, and sustainable development. Grenada fully supports the One China principle, and we are proud of the collaboration that has brought this vision to life.”

Key improvements in the stadium include structural repairs to the steel stands, installation of new seating, painting of interior and exterior walls, upgraded monitoring, fire safety, and public address systems. The stadium also received a modernized electronic scoreboard and replay system along with enhanced internet and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The government release said that the project holds great significance for Grenada, as it represents a vital investment in the development of local sports, and provides a modern facility where Grenadian athletes can hone their skills and pursue their dreams.

Beyond cricket, the upgraded facility is expected to boost sports tourism, youth development, and economic growth, while serving as a vibrant symbol of Grenada’s progress and potential, the release said.

The Grenada National Cricket Stadium hosted matches during the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup.
