U.S. teacher returns to China 26 years later to renew friendship

More than a quarter-century after helping support a Chinese woman’s mission to reclaim desert land, retired American teacher Ronald Sakolsky has returned to the Mu Us Desert for an emotional reunion.

Sakolsky met environmentalist Yin Yuzhen and her husband Bai Wanxiang on Monday, with the three commemorating their long friendship by putting three new saplings into the ground.

Their connection began 26 years ago when Sakolsky learned about Yin’s efforts to fight desertification. He contributed US$5,000 to the cause and also planted a tree during his visit.

The landscape he returned to was dramatically different.

According to ECNS, more than 50,000 trees have since been established in an area once dominated by barren sand, the result of years of work to restore vegetation and prevent the spread of desert conditions.

Sakolsky, reflecting on the scale of the transformation, called what he witnessed a “miracle.”

The reunion has attracted attention online, not only because of the environmental transformation, but also because of the friendship that endured across China and the United States for more than two decades.

For Yin, the occasion was another reminder that persistence and cooperation can produce lasting change. And 26 years after they first planted together, the three new trees have become fresh symbols of a friendship rooted in a shared commitment to the environment.
