China has reaffirmed its support for a new 200-bed hospital in western New Providence, describing the project as a “livelihood initiative” funded through a highly preferential loan, after the United States encouraged the Bahamas to reconsider the financing deal.
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy said the hospital is being developed through “mutual respect and friendly consultation” to meet the country’s healthcare needs and advance the well-being of Bahamians. The embassy stressed that the project is non-geopolitical, respects Bahamian sovereignty, and should not be influenced by external parties.

Last year, the Bahamian government signed a US$195 million loan agreement with China’s Export-Import Bank, covering roughly 73% of the project’s cost, with the remainder financed domestically. The main contractor, China Railway Construction Corporation, will follow a 50-50 ratio of local and foreign workers, with discussions underway to increase Bahamian participation.
Bahamian officials noted that while the US offered alternative financing options, none met the scale, timing, or certainty required. Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville emphasized the government’s right to choose partners based on national priorities, saying the project reflects a practical and timely solution for public health.
