China donates 5,000 solar power systems to support Cuba's energy transition

China has donated an additional 5,000 photovoltaic (solar) power systems to Cuba, strengthening cooperation between the two countries and expanding access to reliable electricity in underserved communities.

The systems will be distributed across all 169 municipalities and are intended to provide electricity to isolated rural homes, while also ensuring uninterrupted power for essential facilities such as health centres, emergency medical services, childcare institutions, orphanages and banking branches.

The official handover ceremony was held at Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment. Officials from both countries highlighted the significant social impact of the donation.

The new systems, provided through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), offer improved performance over a similar donation made last year. Each unit delivers 3.6 kilowatt-hours of power and features a storage capacity of 14.3 kilowatt-hours, providing greater efficiency and reliability for Cuba's national energy needs.

Cuba's Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, expressed appreciation for China's continued support, noting that the assistance comes at a critical time as the country faces ongoing energy challenges.

Chinese Ambassador to Cuba Hua Xin said the donation, made ahead of the centenary of Fidel Castro's birth, reflects the Chinese people's commitment to improving the well-being of the Cuban people through practical cooperation.

The latest contribution further strengthens China-Cuba energy cooperation and supports Cuba's ongoing transition toward cleaner and more resilient energy sources.
