China eyes greater AI, Technology cooperation with Dutch Caribbean

China is signalling plans to deepen technology cooperation with the Caribbean, offering training, equipment and knowledge-sharing as countries across the region seek to build capacity in artificial intelligence and other emerging industries.

Chinese Consul-General Zhang Kaibin outlined the areas for cooperation during a reception in Curaçao marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Zhang said developing countries, including those in the Caribbean, could benefit from Chinese expertise and support through personnel training, exchanges and access to equipment.

He highlighted artificial intelligence, renewable energy, robotics and quantum technology among sectors experiencing rapid development in China.

The Consul-General said Beijing also wants stronger economic, cultural and people-to-people ties with Curaçao and the wider Dutch Caribbean.

He pointed to China’s economic performance, saying GDP reached approximately US$10 trillion in the first half of 2026, with year-on-year growth of 4.7 percent.

Zhang also recognised the Chinese community across the Dutch Caribbean for its contribution to local societies and its role in maintaining links with China.

The proposed expansion into technology and skills development reflects a growing dimension of China’s engagement with the Caribbean, as regional countries look for partnerships to strengthen digital capacity and prepare their economies for emerging technologies.
