The governments of Antigua and Barbuda and China have signed an agreement for the second phase of a grant-funded housing programme that will deliver 100 new homes across the twin-island nation.

The project includes the construction of 50 homes in Bolans and 50 in Barbuda, following the near completion of the Booby Alley redevelopment.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said China is providing an estimated US$20 million grant to finance the initiative, which will feature climate-resilient two- and three-bedroom homes aimed at expanding access to affordable housing.

Chinese Ambassador Jiang Wei said the project reflects China's continued support for Antigua and Barbuda's development and the strong relationship between the two countries.

Government Senator Knacyntar Nedd said the Barbuda homes will be offered through a rent-to-own programme, giving eligible families the opportunity to become homeowners without requiring traditional bank financing.

Construction is expected to begin after preparatory work under the newly signed implementation agreement is completed.
