Chinese medical team helps establish health promotion centre in Guyana

Guyana and China have expanded their cooperation in public health with the opening of a new Health Promotion Centre at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown.

The facility, established through the 21st Chinese Medical Team to Guyana, was officially inaugurated on August 15 and will provide health screening, testing, education and fitness services to public servants and residents in surrounding communities.

The initiative was led by public health specialist Dr. Zhu Qianrang, who worked with local and Chinese partners over a six-month period to develop the centre. The Ministry of Health provided the location, while Chinese companies Zijin Mining and Shandong Hi-Speed Dejian Group contributed equipment and other resources.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Yang Yang said the initiative represents another step in the longstanding health partnership between the two countries and is expected to strengthen preventative healthcare services.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony welcomed the centre, noting its potential to encourage healthier lifestyles as Guyana continues efforts to reduce the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases.

The centre is expected to complement existing health programmes by placing greater emphasis on prevention, early screening and public education.
