Guyana and the People's Republic of China have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation, with senior officials from both countries highlighting the enduring partnership as a key driver of development and shared prosperity.

The commitment was reiterated during a seminar celebrating the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Guyana's 60th Independence Anniversary, where Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang reflected on decades of cooperation and outlined opportunities for closer collaboration.

Minister Edghill said the Guyana-China partnership has delivered tangible benefits in areas such as education, infrastructure, agriculture, telecommunications, technology, investment and cultural exchange. He noted that scholarships, training opportunities and the involvement of Chinese companies in major infrastructure projects have also helped strengthen the skills of Guyanese professionals through knowledge transfer.

As Guyana continues its rapid transformation, Edghill said the country values partnerships built on mutual respect, shared benefits and long-term development. He stressed the importance of recognising countries that supported Guyana before its recent economic growth, describing China as a trusted and longstanding partner.

He also pointed to China's contribution to many of the more than 12,000 development projects currently underway across Guyana, expressing confidence that cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow in the years ahead.

Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang reaffirmed China's commitment to strengthening ties with Guyana, saying both countries share common development goals and a vision for mutually beneficial cooperation.

She said China is prepared to expand collaboration in governance, poverty reduction, development planning, youth development, healthcare, agriculture, education, infrastructure, energy, the digital economy and talent training. The ambassador also highlighted the importance of increasing people-to-people exchanges to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Yang added that, as members of the Global South, Guyana and China will continue working together in international forums to promote the interests of developing countries and support a more equitable global order.
