Latin America, Caribbean can learn from China – former Ecuadorian Minister
Countries across Latin America and the Caribbean can benefit from studying China's development model and governance under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), according to Héctor Villagrán Cepeda, Ecuador's former Minister of Government.
Speaking at a forum in Shanghai on the role of soft power in the CPC's long-term governance, Villagrán Cepeda said China's transformation over the past several decades offers valuable lessons for developing nations pursuing sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction, and stronger public institutions.

He noted that China's achievements reflect the importance of long-term planning, investment in infrastructure, technological innovation, and people-centred development policies. While every country must follow its own path, he said many of China's experiences can be adapted by Latin American and Caribbean nations to support their own development goals.
The forum brought together academics, policymakers, and international representatives to discuss China's governance model and the role of cultural exchanges, diplomacy, education, and international cooperation in strengthening global partnerships.
Villagrán Cepeda also highlighted the growing ties between China and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, noting that cooperation in trade, infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and education continues to create new opportunities for development across the region.
