The rich cultural heritage of Latin America and the Caribbean was on display in Beijing as diplomats and visitors gathered for LAC Day 2026, an event aimed at strengthening cultural connections and cooperation with China.

Hosted by the diplomatic corps of Latin American and Caribbean countries in China, the October 10 celebration at Chaoyang Park featured traditional performances, regional cuisine, handicrafts and exhibitions highlighting the diversity of the region.

Dominica's Ambassador to China, Martin Charles, who serves as dean of the LAC diplomatic corps, said the initiative provides an opportunity to deepen engagement beyond traditional diplomacy.

He emphasised the importance of expanding exchanges in tourism, education, youth development and creative industries, noting that stronger relationships depend on greater understanding between people.

China's Foreign Ministry Director-General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, Zhang Run, highlighted the shared interests and growing connections between China and the region despite their geographical distance.

Nicaragua's Ambassador to China, Ramiro José Cruz Flores, also welcomed the event, pointing to expanding cooperation over the past decade and expressing optimism about future partnerships.

The celebration provided a platform for participating countries to showcase their cultural identities while encouraging closer connections with Chinese audiences.

The event reflects the growing emphasis on people-to-people diplomacy as China and Latin American and Caribbean countries seek to broaden their relationships through cultural exchanges, tourism and educational cooperation.
