MWC26 Shanghai signals shift toward AI-driven “Mobile Intelligence” era

The 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC26) in Shanghai highlighted a major shift in the global mobile industry-from connectivity to full-scale intelligent systems.


A standout attraction was a humanoid robot football challenge, where robots independently detected, calculated, and executed penalty kicks in real time. The demonstration showcased advances in embodied intelligence, combining perception, decision-making, and motion control without human input.


Industry leaders at the event emphasized that mobile communications are evolving beyond connecting people and devices. According to GSMA and telecom executives, the next phase is “Mobile AI,” where networks process intelligent, task-based information rather than simple data streams.


Chinese authorities outlined priorities including next-generation infrastructure, 6G research, and deeper integration of AI, quantum technologies, and embodied intelligence. They also stressed the importance of global cooperation on 6G standards and AI governance.

China Mobile described a transition from mobile communication to mobile computing and now to mobile AI, highlighting efforts to build open intelligent ecosystems, autonomous networks, and AI-powered services for industries and public access.


China Unicom also announced plans to expand globally through improved submarine cables, cross-border networks, and satellite-based IoT systems, shifting from a basic connectivity provider to a full digital services platform.


Huawei added that 2026 marks a key turning point, proposing expanded AI-network integration, broader spectrum allocation, and deeper space-terrestrial network convergence to support future 6G demands.


Across the event, examples ranging from robotics to accessibility AI tools underscored a common theme: the mobile industry is entering an era where intelligence is embedded into every layer of communication infrastructure.
