Tiangong Ultra smashes 100m record as humanoid robot games end in Beijing

China’s Tiangong Ultra has set a new 100-metre record at the 2nd World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, completing the sprint in 8.64 seconds on Wednesday.

Developed by Beijing-based X-Humanoid, the robot improved on the 8.86 seconds recorded during the repechage and marked a significant leap from the fastest time of more than 12 seconds at the inaugural games last year.

Tiangong Ultra emerged as one of the standout performers of the five-day competition, repeatedly rewriting the 100m record before producing its fastest run in the final.

Its closest rival, Honor’s Lightning, also entered the games with an impressive record, having completed a humanoid robot half-marathon in April in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.

The 100m final was the last event of the games, which featured robots competing in several sporting disciplines designed to test speed, balance, coordination and endurance.

Organisers and analysts say the competition is also a testing ground for advances in humanoid robotics, with lessons from the events expected to help improve the technology for future real-world applications.
