Book-style foldable smartphones are quickly shifting from niche gadgets into powerful AI-driven productivity tools, according to industry experts.
A Counterpoint Research report says foldables are increasingly suited for complex AI workflows as smartphone AI moves beyond simple features into system-level functions. Global foldable shipments are expected to grow about 20% in 2026, with book-style models rising from 52% to 65% of the segment. China remains the largest market, accounting for more than half of global shipments.
The report notes that large screens are becoming more important for productivity than entertainment, allowing users to manage multiple apps, verify AI outputs, and handle multitask workflows more efficiently than traditional smartphones. AI is seen as enhancing—not just driving—foldable demand.

In China, policy support for AI-enabled devices is accelerating development of smart phones, PCs, and home technologies. Vivo’s new X Fold6 reflects this trend, positioning foldables as “mobile AI workstations.” Its OriginOS 6 Fold introduces advanced multitasking tools like split-screen workspaces, gesture-based switching, and AI-assisted cross-app functions.
Industry forecasts from IDC predict 2026 will be a turning point, especially with expected new competition in the foldable market. However, high costs and software optimization challenges remain barriers to wider adoption.
Overall, experts say the next phase of foldables will be defined less by screen size—and more by how intelligently devices integrate AI into everyday work.
