China–Caribbean relations in focus at UWI diplomatic dialogue

The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad through the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business, recently hosted a Diplomatic Dialogue that explored the evolving relationship between China and the Caribbean and the prospects for deeper cooperation in trade, investment, and sustainable development.


The event brought together prominent academics, policy experts, and business leaders from both regions, creating a vibrant platform for discussion on shared opportunities and mutual growth.


Among the distinguished contributors were Professor Zhou Min, Director of the Center for Caribbean Studies at Hangzhou Normal University, and Professor Shen Wei, KoGuan Distinguished Professor of Law at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Both scholars shared valuable perspectives on the strategic importance of the Caribbean within China’s global engagement, emphasizing the potential for knowledge exchange, cultural collaboration, and regional development.

Following their presentations, a panel discussion featured Mr. Mariano Browne, Chief Executive Officer of the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business; Mr. Kiran Singh, President of the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce; and Professor of Practice Winston Dookeran, a respected economist and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago.


Panelists highlighted the growing significance of China–Caribbean partnerships in areas such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and education. They also underscored the role of the private sector and academia in fostering inclusive and sustainable growth across the region.


Mr. Browne noted that building strong relationships with international partners like China is essential for enhancing business competitiveness and innovation within the Caribbean. Mr. Singh emphasized the importance of encouraging entrepreneurship and investment opportunities that can benefit both local communities and the wider regional economy.

Professor Dookeran concluded by stressing the need for a “new diplomatic narrative”—one that prioritizes dialogue, trust, and mutual understanding between the Caribbean and China.


All participants expressed optimism about the future of China–Caribbean relations and reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively to promote regional development, shared prosperity, and global connectivity.


The event was jointly organized by UWI St. Augustine, the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business, and the Greater San Fernando Area Chamber of Commerce, underscoring the importance of partnerships between academia, business, and government in advancing diplomatic and economic cooperation.
