The All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots (ACFTC) held an event in Beijing Sunday to mark the first Commemoration Day of Taiwan’s Restoration, following the national legislature’s vote last Friday to establish October 25 as the official observance.

Taiwanese participants told the Global Times the day reflects shared aspirations for national reunification, honors historical truth, and highlights ties across the Taiwan Strait.

Qi Jialin, chairman of the Alliance for the Reunification of China, called the day a “significant milestone” and said reunification is inevitable. “Over the past 80 years, we have built the strength and confidence to establish this commemoration,” he said.

Li Haiyong, a deputy to the National People’s Congress, said the legislation fulfills a long-standing wish among Taiwan compatriots to clarify their status and recognize Taiwan’s restoration.

Legal experts cited the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 as establishing full sovereignty over Taiwan, rejecting claims based on post-WWII treaties as invalid under international law.

Business and cultural voices emphasized cross-Strait connections. Tang Wenyu, chairwoman of Phoenix City, said shared culinary traditions show the islands’ common roots. “We are one family and must work toward national reunification,” she said.

Peking University student Qiu Bingru, originally from Taipei, said the mainland treats Taiwan people as part of the same nation, reinforcing the significance of the new national day.
