China is on track to produce more than 100,000 humanoid robots in 2026, according to Gan Xiaobin, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday ahead of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), Gan said the country's rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem is accelerating the growth of the robotics sector and contributing to China's drive for high-quality economic development.

He noted that more than 30 percent of China's industrial enterprises above the designated size have already adopted AI applications. Gan also highlighted the role of the National AI Industry Investment Fund, which is increasing investment to attract greater private and institutional capital into the AI industry.

Many of the latest technological breakthroughs will be showcased at the 2026 WAIC, scheduled to take place in Shanghai from July 17 to 20.

Held under the theme "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future," this year's conference will include forums, exhibitions, innovation showcases, startup incubation activities and talent exchange programmes.

Organisers say more than 1,100 exhibitors will participate, displaying over 3,000 AI-related products and technologies, including more than 300 making their world premiere.
