Beijing is accelerating efforts to help Cuba weather a severe energy crisis, offering solar power solutions after roughly 10.9 million people were left without electricity amid an ongoing US oil blockade.

China’s ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, said on Monday that joint energy projects are underway to address the “complex power situation” in the Caribbean nation. “Latin America and the Caribbean are one big family of sovereign, independent countries, and in no way can be the backyard of any country,” Hua told reporters, emphasizing China’s commitment to supporting Havana.

Cuban media reported that Beijing plans to expand renewable energy initiatives, particularly solar projects, in the country. Chinese donors have already provided 5,000 household solar kits, set to be installed in clinics and an elderly care facility.

China has also assisted in developing 49 solar parks across Cuba, with more expected to come online by 2028. According to the International Action Centre, solar energy’s share of Cuba’s electricity generation has surged from 5.8% early last year to more than 20% this month, highlighting the growing role of renewables amid the ongoing blackout.

The move underscores China’s expanding influence in Latin America and its efforts to showcase its renewable energy capabilities while providing tangible aid to a longtime ally facing mounting energy challenges.
