With the holiday season fast approaching, members of the Chinese-Bahamian community gathered with senior police officials yesterday to discuss rising concerns over crime and police response times.
The meeting comes in the wake of a high-profile incident earlier this year in which a local Chinese store owner was shot in the arm.
About 40 community members attended the session, including Chinese Ambassador Yan Jiarong, to address safety challenges affecting small business owners and residents.

The shooting, which occurred in July while the victim was on her way to a social event, has left many in the community seeking reassurance and guidance on protecting themselves and their businesses.
The discussion also focused on police response times, with residents expressing frustration over delays in 911 responses and in the collection of crime scene evidence. Many business owners called for a more proactive approach from law enforcement to ensure their safety.

Police Commissioner Shanta Knowles and her team shared practical tips for personal and business safety, emphasizing that protecting life should always come before property in situations such as armed robberies.
Officers also encouraged community members to participate in neighborhood watch programs and build closer relationships with local precincts.

Keno Wong, former chairman of the National Neighbourhood Watch Council, described the dialogue as productive. “The meeting was very cordial,” Wong said. “Police were receptive to questions, and we’re already planning a follow-up session to continue these discussions.”
The Chinese-Bahamian community, though modest in size, has played a significant role in The Bahamas’ economic landscape. From convenience stores and bars to wholesale and retail businesses, Chinese entrepreneurs have been central to providing goods, services, and employment opportunities across the islands.
Beyond commerce, the community also contributes to social and cultural life, supporting educational programs, scholarships, and initiatives that strengthen ties between The Bahamas and China.
As the year-end holidays approach, both law enforcement and community leaders are hopeful that continued collaboration will create a safer environment for residents, shoppers, and business owners alike.
