Chinese Embassy donates drones to boost mangrove monitoring in Guyana
The Chinese Embassy in Guyana has donated GYD $3.2 million worth of drones and accessories to strengthen mangrove monitoring and conservation efforts in the Barima-Mora Passage, one of Guyana’s largest and most intact mangrove ecosystems.
The equipment was handed over on Thursday, October 29, at the Chinese Embassy, with representatives from the Indigenous communities of Imbotero and Smith Creek participating in the ceremony.
Funded by the Chinese Embassy and implemented through the Guyana Marine Conservation Society (GMCS), the initiative reflects growing cooperation in environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable development.
The donation includes advanced DJI drones equipped with enhanced camera technology and extended flight capabilities, allowing trained Indigenous youth to capture high-quality aerial footage and collect environmental data.

The technology will improve the communities’ ability to monitor mangrove forests, assess environmental changes and support evidence-based decisions on the sustainable management of natural resources.
Located in northwestern Guyana, the Barima-Mora Passage is a biodiversity-rich coastal ecosystem comprising extensive mangrove forests and estuaries that support local livelihoods and provide important natural protection against climate-related threats.
The initiative also promotes the integration of traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern technology, empowering young community members to play a greater role in environmental monitoring and conservation.
During the handover ceremony, representatives of the Chinese Embassy and the beneficiary communities discussed the importance of continued collaboration in protecting Guyana’s natural environment.
The donation underscores China's support for community-based environmental initiatives in Guyana while strengthening cooperation between the two countries in promoting sustainable development and climate resilience.
