A Chinese medical delegation delivered much-needed healthcare services to residents of Mahaicony Karamat, a remote village in Guyana’s Region Five, during an outreach exercise on November 29.
The 21st China Medical Team to Guyana visited the community at the invitation of the Guyana–China Friendship Society and local leaders. The team traveled more than three hours from Georgetown over rough terrain to reach the village, located about 70 kilometers from the capital.
Residents gathered early for the free consultations. One patient, who has been battling kidney stones, said the visit brought renewed hope: “We really need professional medical care. The arrival of the Chinese doctors gives us hope.”

The team provided a range of services, including internal medicine, surgical consultations, gynecology, and basic screenings such as blood pressure checks and eye exams. Traditional Chinese medicine was also introduced and drew significant interest from villagers.
“The Chinese doctors were very professional and took time to explain everything clearly,” an elderly patient said after her examination. “I now understand my health condition much better.”
More than 50 residents were treated during the one-day outreach. Dr. Li Huansong, head of the medical team, said bringing care to underserved communities remains a core mission: “Serving communities at the grassroots level is a long-standing tradition of our team. Though the journey was challenging, seeing the smiles of the people made it all worthwhile.”

China’s medical teams have been supporting Guyana’s public health system for decades. Officials say the ongoing program not only strengthens healthcare capacity but also deepens the longstanding friendship between the two nations. The team pledged to continue similar initiatives as part of its commitment to community health and bilateral cooperation.
