New envoy pledges closer China-Grenada relations

Newly-appointed Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Grenada Yang Shu made courtesy calls on some Grenadian officials recently.
On October 17, 2025, Yang met with Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Grenada to exchange views on China-Grenada relations.
Ambassador Yang thanked Hutchinson and her ministry for the support provided to the Chinese Embassy and commended Grenada’s adherence to the one-China principle. He also introduced the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping.
He said that the two countries have achieved fruitful results in various fields of cooperation over the past 20 years, and that China is willing to deepen practical cooperation to promote bilateral relations to a new level.

Hutchinson recalled her past visits to China and highly commended the development of friendly cooperation between the two countries and China's selfless assistance to Grenada. She said that Grenada attaches great importance to its friendship with China and will strengthen cooperation to promote long-term, sound and stable development of bilateral relations that bring benefits to the two nations and two peoples.
Additionally, on October 16, Ambassador Yang paid a courtesy call on Randy Connaught, Commissioner of the Royal Grenada Police Force(RGPF) to exchange views on police cooperation.
Ambassador Yang commended the efforts of the RGPF in protecting the lives and property of Chinese citizens and institutions in Grenada. He said that the police and security cooperation is an important part of bilateral relations and China stands ready to further deepen police cooperation with Grenada and elevate bilateral relations to new heights.

Connaught welcomed Yang to his new post and recalled his past visits to China. He further commended the fruitful results of the police cooperation between the two countries and reaffirmed Grenada’s adherence to the one-China principle. He said that the RGPF is willing to enhance police cooperation with China and will, as always, protect the safety and lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens and institutions in Grenada.
Meanwhile, Yang also met with Adrian Thomas, Minister for Tourism, the Creative Economy, and Culture of Grenada to exchange views on China-Grenada relations.
The ambassador thanked Thomas and his ministry for the support provided to the Chinese Embassy and briefed him on the development of China's tourism, cultural and creative industries. He said that China has huge potential in the tourism consumption market and China is willing to further deepen practical cooperation with Grenada to promote the implementation of more tourism facilitation measures, and jointly inject new impetus into bilateral relations.

Thomas welcomed Yang to his new post and introduced the organizational structure and functions of his ministry and commended the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries. He reaffirmed Grenada’s adherence to the one-China principle and expressed hope to visit China to draw upon its development experience and promote practical cooperation.
Last week, Chinese President Xinping announced that Yang was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Grenada, replacing Wei Hongtian.
