The Suriname Chinese United Association (SCUA), in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy, commemorated 172 years of Chinese immigration to Suriname with a ceremonial event on Monday, October 20, 2025. Wreaths were laid at the Friendship Monument located at Trefossa Square—commonly known as Friendship Park—on Jagernath Lachmon Street. The event was attended by President Jennifer Simons and Vice President Gregory Rusland.

In her address, President Simons reflected on the historical significance of Chinese immigration and the enduring relationship between Suriname and China. She congratulated the Surinamese people on reaching this milestone and highlighted the deep roots the Chinese community has established within the nation.

"The Chinese immigrants of the past became part of our society. They built relationships, supported their communities, and over generations became an integral part of our families and culture," said President Simons. She emphasized that the contributions of the Chinese community go beyond trade and entrepreneurship. "Today, Surinamese of Chinese descent are represented in all sectors—from business to politics—and they continue to help shape the future of our country."

The president also announced the launch of a new initiative: beginning next year, Suriname will observe a “Heritage Month” to celebrate unity and cultural diversity. “Awareness of our unity and the need to preserve it is essential. Only together can we build a prosperous and united Suriname,” she added.

Chinese Ambassador Lin Ji expressed his appreciation for the contributions of the Chinese community to Suriname’s development. “With hardworking hands and indomitable spirit, the first Chinese immigrants worked side by side with other communities,” he said.

The ambassador described the immigrants’ legacy as a “glorious chapter” in Suriname’s multicultural history. He also acknowledged the growing political and civic participation of the Chinese community, noting their increasing representation in parliament and government as a testament to integration and mutual respect.

Ambassador Lin Ji announced that the Chinese Embassy will construct a new commemorative pavilion in Friendship Park, honoring the early Chinese immigrants and symbolizing the enduring friendship between China and Suriname.

Looking ahead to the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations in 2026, Lin Ji expressed optimism for even closer cooperation. “The relationship between China and Suriname is deeply rooted and steadfast. May our friendship continue to flourish and bring prosperity to both our peoples,” he concluded.
