Xi extends congratulations as Suriname, China celebrate 50 years diplomatic relations

President Xi Jinping on May 28, 2026, exchanged congratulatory messages with Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Xi Jinping pointed out that the friendship between China and Suriname has a long-standing history and remains unshakable through the test of time. Over the past five decades, he said, the two sides have always respected and treated each other as equals. He believes the two countries have firmly supported each other on issues involving core interests, major concerns, and continuously deepened mutually beneficial cooperation, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples. He attaches great importance to the development of China-Suriname relations.

He said he is willing to work together with President Geerlings-Simons to take the 50th anniversary as a new starting point to enhance strategic mutual trust, carry forward the traditional friendship, promote practical cooperation in various fields to achieve more outcomes, and jointly write a new chapter in the China-Suriname strategic cooperative partnership.
Geerlings-Simons stated that over the 50 years, Suriname-China relations have continued to develop in depth. She said the friendship between the two countries is solid and profound, and the strategic cooperation has become increasingly close.

Geerlings-Simons said she deeply cherishes the fruitful results of cooperation between the two countries in various fields. Looking ahead to the next 50 years, she said she hopes that the two sides will further enhance unity, deepen and expand cooperation, and realize the common vision of prosperity and development.
